Goals from Markus Babbel, Steven Gerrard, and two from Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen had Liverpool in control, but Alavés showcased incredible resilience to bring the game level. With both teams pushing for a winner, it was an unfortunate own goal by Delfí Geli in the 116th minute that handed the trophy to Liverpool, culminating their treble-winning season under Gérard Houllier.
